About Nijams
The Nizams of Hyderabad, rulers of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, governed the Deccan from 1724 to 1948, leaving a lasting legacy on the city’s culture, architecture, and development. Their reign saw the construction of iconic structures like Chowmahalla Palace and Falaknuma Palace, blending Indo-Islamic and European styles. Under their patronage, Hyderabad became a cultural hub where Urdu literature, poetry, and art flourished. The seventh Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, modernized the city with institutions like Osmania University and the High Court, while infrastructure projects such as the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs addressed urban challenges and enhanced public welfare.
Despite being one of the wealthiest dynasties, the Nizams are remembered for their inclusive governance, fostering communal harmony through a spirit of unity known as the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb. They maintained autonomy through an independent currency, army, and administration. However, their rule ended with Hyderabad’s integration into India in 1948 through Operation Polo. Today, the Nizams’ influence endures in Hyderabad’s vibrant culture, diverse traditions, and architectural landmarks, bridging the city’s regal past with its dynamic present.
